Christmas Bird Countlogo holly small .jpg

Join us for the 2016 Christmas Bird Count! FDRD has adopted an existing 15-mile diameter circle around Sapphire Point between Keystone and Breckenridge on Swan Mountain Road. On Friday, December 16 we will meet at the parking lot of Sapphire Point at 8:30am for coffee and donuts, and to get started on our count. Volunteers will spend the day searching for birds by foot, car, skis, or snowshoes on trails and roadside spots within the 15 mile diameter. We will wrap up our count around 3pm, or as weather permits, and end the day with cookies and warm drinks at the Pour House in Summit Cove. If you cannot meet us in the morning, please email Jill@fdrd.org for instructions on how to conduct your count and submit your results.

Speaker Series

As our first installment of our monthly speaker series, FDRD has teamed up with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) to offer a “Know Before You Go” avalanche awareness talk on Tuesday, January 3rd at Mountain Outfitters in Breckenridge. Now more than ever is a great time to start thinking about how to stay safe while having fun in the backcountry, so join us as we discuss this very relevant and interesting topic! Beer and snacks will be provided, starting at 6:30pm.

Snowshoe Tours

FDRD is pleased to announce that we will be offering once a month snowshoe tours here in the White River National Forest! On Friday, January 13th come join our guest naturalist, Peter Suneson, from Walking Mountains Science Center on our first leisurely-paced snowshoe tour. We will explore the wonders of the natural world in the seemingly silent winter, while taking in spectacular views of our iconic mountain landscape. All you need are snowshoes (if you have them), warm clothing, water, snacks, and of course your sense of wonder! We will meet at the Dillon Ranger Station at 9am and carpool to the trailhead. We will have plenty of extra snowshoes for those who need a pair—just let us know!
